1. How do I get sworn into North Carolina State Courts?

a. Complete North Carolina State Bar Oath Form; and,

b. Contact the Craven County Clerk of Court at 252-639-9004 to schedule swearing in.


2. How do I get sworn into United States District Court - Eastern District of North Carolina?

a. Complete Oath United States District Court Form; and,

b. Contact the Federal Judicial Assistant at 252-638-3068 to schedule swearing in.


3. Am I required to join the Craven County Bar Association?

No, much like the North Carolina Bar Association, the Craven County Bar Association is a voluntary organization meant to foster attorney mentoring and camaraderie.  


4. Which bar organizations are attorneys practicing in Craven County, North Carolina required to join?

a. The North Carolina State Bar; and,

b. The 4th Judicial District.


5. How do I get on the court appointed list?

a. Review the Appointment of Counsel For Indigent Defendants in 4th Judicial District Rules to find out which court appointed lists you qualify for; and,

b. Determine which of those lists you want to be on; and,

c. Contact the Judicial District 4 or Craven County Bar Association President to request a court appointment letter be sent to the Clerk of Court.


6. How do I get a copy of the Local Rules?

Visit the North Carolina Court System website.  The site has the local rules for each county in North Carolina.


7. How do I get a copy of the Court Calendars?

Visit the North Carolina Court System website.  The site has the court calendars for each county in North Carolina.  However, it does not have calendars for all of the civil district courts; these must be obtained from the Clerk's Office, Civil Division.


8. How do I get a copy of the Court Schedule?

The Chief Superior Court Judge and Chief District Court Judge are required to prepare a Court Schedule so that attorneys know when the next court dates are going to be.  You can obtain these schedules by contacting the Chief Superior Court Judge and Chief District Court Judge's secretaries.  The Craven County Clerk of Court should be able to provide you with the secretaries' names and contact information.


9. How do I get a courthouse copy key?

New attorneys should go to the Craven County Clerk of Court and request a copy account and copy key.  The attorney will be required to put a deposit down on the account for the dollar amount the attorney wants to have on the account.


10. How do I get a courthouse mailbox?

Attorney courthouse mailboxes are located in the Civil Division in the courthouse.  

New attorneys that are not joining a firm should go to the Civil Division and request a mailbox.
